The mission of the University at Buffalo’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences is to foster economic development by connecting university resources with life sciences and high-tech industry through funding, research and development support, programming, and education, with the goal of helping companies find business solutions, accelerate new ideas, and grow.

This technology-based economic development mission is complemented by the COE’s efforts to support the advancement of new discoveries in science that seek better ways of preventing and managing disease and improving lives.

COE Research Partners

COE research institutions have been around for more than 100 years with the University at Buffalo (UB) as the lead academic organization, and Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute as research partners.

The COE and its research partners are part of 400,000 square feet of state-of-the-art research facilities in three new interconnected buildings, known as the Buffalo Life Sciences Complex, on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, a thriving area of clinical, research and academic operations employing over 8,000 people daily. The COE includes over 100 scientists with biological, physical and computational expertise engaged in interdisciplinary translational research with COE collaborators.

Marnie LaVigne, Ph.D., Receives Community Stewardship Award   

Our very own Marnie LaVigne is this year’s recipient of the Community Stewardship Award from The Amherst Chamber of Commerce! Hunter James Kelly Research Institute

Led by Drs. Lawrence Wrabetz and Laura Feltri, the mission of the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute--located within the NYS Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences--is to study myelin and its diseases.  Myelin is the fatty insulation around axons (the wires of the nervous system) in the brain, spinal cord and nerves. The HJKRI incorporates both basic and clinical science programs.

Basic research is based on a multi-disciplinary approach to understand how myelin is formed, how it is damaged in disease, and how it may be repaired.  In particular, HJKRI will study disease mechanisms of Krabbe Disease in order to formulate therapies

The clinical research conducted by HJKRI at the CoE analyzes information revealed by newborn screening for Krabbe Disease and other leukodystrophies. The World Wide Registry for patients with Krabbe Disease aims to improve diagnosis and prognosis, and to provide outcome measures for clinical trials.

This integrated approach, together with a critical mass of resources and investigators, will generate information that will promote effective treatment strategies not only for children with leukodystrophies, but also patients with Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, neuropathies and other diseases in which myelin is damaged. New UB Program Promotes Businesses in Kensington-Bailey District

The UB School of Management’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership brings the Allstate Minority and Women Emerging Entrepreneurs Program to the Kensington-Bailey district in the City of Buffalo. New and established business owners will meet twice a year to hone their skills in all aspects of running a business, including marketing, merchandizing and business plan writing.

Anti-Vibration Invention Wins Contest’s $25,000 Top Prize

Congratulations to EMVISS, the winners of the University at Buffalo’s Henry A. Panasci Jr. Technology Entrepreneurial Competition! EMVISS’ anti-vibration invention will help ensure that high-precision devices will not be affected from vibrations that may hinder optimal performance. To further develop the product, ENVISS was also awarded office space, and legal and accounting services.
