K-12 & OUTREACH PROGRAM

The CoE’s K-12 & Outreach Programs seek to spread awareness of science and technology among students of all ages. The program combines tours, demonstrations, hands-on activities, lectures, and contributions from the Life Sciences Education Program and the CoE’s Center for Computational Research. Each program strives to encourage students and participants to get involved in the science, math, medical, and technology-related fields, shaping the future of Buffalo and the world.

Life Sciences Education Program
The Life Sciences Education Program seeks to increase awareness of and involvement in life sciences. More importantly, the CoE looks to establish workforce talent development opportunities through the dissemination of information, materials, and educational experiences to broad audiences ranging from the general public to select adult and student populations. Please visit the Life Sciences Education Program home page for more information.

Center For Computational Research
Education and outreach at the high school level is also thriving through the CoE's Center for Computational Research (CCR), which has hosted workshops in computational science for high school students for several years. Based on the success of these summer workshops and a desire to have a broader impact on science and math education at the high school level in WNY, a pilot program in computational science was launched with 3 local high schools in the Fall of 2003. The high school program is a year-long extracurricular activity. From this humble beginning, CCR has developed a self-guided course in bioinformatics targeted at the high school level, with many useful, self-contained modules that the teacher can incorporate into their curriculum.
