UNDERGRADUATE & GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Buffalo Niagara has nearly 30 colleges and universities that produce over 20,000 new graduates each year. The region's educational institutions provide a wide variety of programs in the life sciences that yield more than 800 life sciences graduates annually. In fact, Buffalo ranks 4th in the nation for number of annual research and development degrees. Additionally, the region has been able to recruit prominent life sciences researchers from all over the country and the world due to the quality of the academic and research activities.

Developing Life Sciences Talent

Bioinformatics education at the University at BuffaloOne of the goals of the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics & Life Sciences (CoE) is to act as an academic resource to educate scientists, engineers and researchers in critical science and technology areas pertaining to bioinformatics and life sciences. The University at Buffalo, as a comprehensive research university and lead institution in the CoE, is uniquely qualified to develop and offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the interdisciplinary areas at the heart of life sciences.

The University at Buffalo, in tandem with expertise from the other CoE research partners at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, has established new bachelors and masters degree programs to support the CoE's educational mission. In addition to more traditional areas of study in biological sciences, these new programs include:

Information Management & Information Technology Support Life Sciences

The UB School of Informatics has developed a Master of Arts in Informatics designed to prepare students for careers in designing and managing information systems. Additionally, the Department of Biostatistics (School of Public Health) offer academic training programs in life sciences fields leading to masters and doctoral degrees.

In line with the high performance computing focus of the CoE, the Center for Computational Research (CCR) helped establish an Advanced (Graduate) Certificate in Computational Science at UB, bringing together interested teachers from five departments (Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Physics. Outside of UB, CCR has fostered relationships with four-year SUNY colleges at Geneseo and Brockport, as well as private four-year colleges such as Canisius College and Niagara University who have synergistic interests in developing computational science talent for high-tech areas like life sciences.

Preparation for Industry

In addition to these science and technology programs, short-term training/certificate programs are under development that will cater to regional industrial needs. Similarly, the UB School of Management launched a new biotechnology concentration to grow entrepreneurial and business talent to assist in the commercialization of life sciences technologies.
