December - March - Apply Now for the New York State Business Plan Competition
The College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering at the University at Albany, UAlbany's School of Business, the Lally School of Management & Technology at Rensselaer, and Syracuse University will host the third annual New York State Business Plan Competition on April 26, 2012. The New York State Business Plan Competition is a venture creation and innovation competition that was established in 2009 to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship throughout New York State's colleges and universities. The top applications will be selected by an external panel of judges to present in the final round of the competition and compete for over $100,000 in cash prizes. InfoTech Niagara and the Western New York Association of College Career Centers (WNYACCC) are partnering to host a programming competition for WNY college students. This competition will bring together talented technical students and working professionals to mentor the students through this exciting competition. The competition challenges students to design a website or app which captures the “Earth Clock” concept. This challenge will require students to use their technical knowledge and stretch beyond by gathering data outside their typical studies. An estimated 51,000 new health IT professionals will be needed over the next five years. July 28 - UBThisSummer Lecture Series: Toward the Bionic Human: Medical Devices and How they are Powered (4:00 PM)                                                                                                                                              It has been more than 35 years since the first human implant of a lithium battery; a lithium/iodine cell which powered an implantable cardiac pacemaker. Since that time several battery types have been developed and used successfully in a diverse set of implantable medical devices, including pacemakers, neurostimulators, drug pumps, implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs), and heart assist/replacement devices. The cells used in these devices vary, but there are general requirements that remain constant for all the cells, including: safety, reliability, low weight/small size, predictability of performance, low self discharge and end-of-life indication. Molecular diagnostics can detect many types of diseases at the earliest stages and are expected to be among the highest growth opportunities within the larger field of In-Vitro Diagnostics.  Clinical use of these tests promises to improve patient outcomes and lower healthcare costs.  Yet, molecular diagnostics for clinical use are only now emerging and many factors are interacting to both advance and delay the adoption of these innnovations in clinical practice.

February 17 - SPECIAL EVENT! Life Sciences Commercialization Lecture Series (4:00 PM - 5:00 PM)
Join us for our February presentation featuring John Knopf Ph.D., CEO and Founder of Acceleron Pharma (Cambridge, MA). Dr. Knopf received his Ph.D from SUNY Buffalo and is now leading this privately held biopharmaceutical company through the successful development of unique GDF-targeted therapies for bone growth, muscle growth, and anti-angiogenesis. In February of 2008, Acceleron signed a co-development deal with Celgene worth $50 million upfront and in December published Phase I trial results for the first biologic agent included in this deal. The company has also been financed by leading investment firms including Advanced Technology Ventures, Bessemer Ventures, Flagship Ventures, MPM BioEquities, OrbiMed Advisors, Polaris Ventures, QVT Financial, Sutter Hill Ventures and Venrock. Discussion will include lessons learned by this UB alum during the commercialization path and a unique perspective into his experiences to date. 2008 Life Science Downtown Showcase will highlight life sciences companies and the development of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.  Companies include Hauptmann Woodward Institute, Kinex Pharmaceuticals, Pneuma Partners, SmartPill Corporation and more.  The cost is $15 for Members and $25 for Non-Members.  Registration begins at 12:30pm and the Keynotes speaker begins at 1:00pm.  There will also be Walking Tours: 3 Tours per location (1:45, 2:30, and 3:15).  The company presentations are from 4:15pm-5:15pm including Kinex  Pharmaceuticals, Pneuma Pharmaceuticals and Hunters Hope.  The evening will conclude with a networking receptions from 5:15pm – 6:00pm.  To register or for more information please visit http://www.thepartnership.org/Home/GetInvolved/Calendar.

Bioinformatics and Technology Applications in Medication Management UB Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences
The Steering Committee of the CoEBLS Medication Management Research Network (MMRN) is planning a one-day symposium to discuss the current opportunities to integrate electronic health records, ePrescribing software, bar code technology, biomedical ontology, and digital, personalized medical records in a statewide initiative.  The outcome of the meeting will be to develop a vision and operational plan for interoperability among regional hubs across New York State leading to an integrated MMRN.
